What is the Triple F? It’s a fatbike mid-distance endurance event, designed to take advantage of winter trail riding conditions found in Minnesota during the month of February. All riders with fatbikes are welcome to ride. All those interested in trying a demo fatbike or checking out the excitement are welcome to join in the fun and socializing, without riding. The Fatbike Frozen Forty is a Ride Enterprises, LLC event.
What’s the format? Weather-permitting, we’ll have 4 laps of 10 miles each on beautiful singletrack in Elm Creek Park in Maple Grove, MN (trail map and directions at Frozen40.com). (alternate route available in case of weather-related closure of trail)
Is it a race? No, it’s a mid-distance endurance event for riders who like the challenge of a satisfyingly long ride on a difficult course in winter on a fatbike. However, if snow or weather conditions don’t permit the event to occur on the trail, the event format may change on or just before the day of the event, and a race class might be open to those who choose to race. There will, however, be a fatbike fun/sport class either way.
But I want to win, I want to be the king, the champ, the man/woman above all others. What can I do? We know that many cyclists intense enough to ride 40 miles on a fatbike in winter don’t want to just ride, they want to win. For these individuals, we’ll have the title “King of the Triple F”, awarded to the individual (fatbike only) who completes the most laps (honor system though we’ll be checking in) in the 6-hour event.
Could it be dangerous? Absolutely, but don’t be scared away if you’re comfortable with winter bike riding. While we’ll have some food, beverage, mechanical support, warm-up tent, etc. it’s a winter mountain bike (fatbike) event, in Minnesota. It’s not mall-walking or playing bowling on the Wii. That’s why we’ve got a waiver. That said, this is to be ridden at your own pace, and you choose whether you wish to ride the laps necessary to complete 10, 20, 30 or 40 miles – set your own goal and know your own limits.
Date/time? February 25, 2012. Registration is at 8am, first wave of riders will be released at 9am. Event must be completed by 3pm (if you plan to ride the full 40 miles, you’ll need to plan on a pace of close to 8-10mph, allowing for some breaks / pit stops to warm up or refuel.
What’s the goal of this event? Create a fun, engaging, challenging endurance event that’s less demanding than the Arrowhead 135, but more of an endurance challenge than the many awesome local fatbike and winter bike races. We hope to build the fatbike community and allow riders to meet other fatbike riders, introduce others to the sport (those who want to come out to learn more or see what the excitement is all about), and create a fun event with lots of prizes and cool support from our sponsors.
Who are the sponsors? The primary sponsor is Twenty2 Cycles (in Colorado). Their help and support has been invaluable. They will be coming out to MN with 3 of their beautiful "Bully" fatbikes that you can see in person. Other key sponsors who are contributing substantially to the amenities and features of the event include Trailhead Cycling and Fitness (in Champlin) and Maple Grove Cycling (in Maple Grove). We’ve also had prize donations and other support from – Adam Turman, 45NRth, Bar Mitts, Cognition Caps, XXC Mag, Prerace.com
What’s in it for the riders? 1) A fun trail and challenging ride. If weather conditions don’t allow us to ride the singletrack, we’ll have an alternate route available. 2) Chance to connect with great sponsors, other riders, and meet new people. 3) Opportunity to test yourself or just enjoy a day of winter riding. 4) Cool prizes, swag, food, socializing and fun. We’ll have food, beverages, a heated warm-up tent, and a grill-out. Registered riders will be eligible for some great fatbike gear and bike-related products like energy bars, handmade cycling caps, Bar Mitts, Husker Du tires, laser-etched mugs, and some cool swag.
Alright, enough of the talk – sign up already! We’ll see you on the 25th!
